What is Lasagna?

Lasagna is a type and age-old pasta made from very large, flat sheets. Both terms can be used to refer to an Italian dish that consists of layers of lasagna alternating with fillings like ragu (ground meats), tomato sauce, vegetables, cheeses (which could include mozzarella, ricotta, and parmesan), seasonings and spices such as garlic, basil, oregano, and basil. Grated cheese, which melts after baking, can be sprinkled on top of the dish. In most cases, the cooked pasta is combined with the other ingredients and baked in the oven. Then the casserole is cut into squares for single servings.

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 900 grams thinly sliced mozzarella cheese about 24 slices
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Directions

Cook, stirring constantly until the meat is evenly browned. Add sugar, fresh basil, and fennel to the mixture. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt, pepper, and 1/4 cup chopped parsley. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and tomato sauce. Mix well and bring to a boil. Reduce to low heat and continue to cook for 1 to 4 hours, stirring regularly.

On top, grate 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese. To make three layers, repeat the process two more times. Finish by placing a final layer on top of the pasta.

Combine the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Using aluminum foil, cover the dish.

Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 25 minutes to brown the cheese. Serve right away.

Recipe Notes

You can use red wine, chicken broth, or beef broth instead of white wine.

You can refrigerate your lasagna for up to 48 hours after you have finished assembling it. It is possible to freeze a lasagna of this size, but it would require a lengthy baking time to thaw completely.

Ingredients To Make Lasagna Sheets

  • 220 ml Water
  • 400 gm Refined Flour
  • 1/2 tsp Salt

For boiling:

  • Water
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • Salt to taste

Directions

Add refined flour and salt to taste in a bowl. Mix well, then add water slowly. Combine the flour and water well.

Spread the dough on a kitchen platform. Sprinkle some flour over it. Knead it well, stretching it to a smooth surface. Allow it to rest for 15 to 30 minutes after covering it with a moist cloth.

Once the dough has rested, knead it again. Make 2 or 3 equal balls out of the dough. Dust the dough with flour, then flatten the dough using your hands. To form a thin sheet, roll out the dough with a rolling pin.

The dough is very stiff so it may take some effort to roll thin sheets. You can also use a pasta roller if you have one. You can check if your sheet is thin enough by placing your hands underneath it. If your hands are visible, you should cut them.

You can roll it into a thin sheet and trim the edges to make rectangular sheets.

The size of the sheets can be adjusted to fit your baking dish.

Boil water, add salt to taste and boil the lasagna sheets. Allow for a 5- to 6-minute boil time. The lasagna sheets can be strained and used to bake lasagna.

Ingredients For Assembling

  • Lasagna sheets
  • White sauce
  • Red sauce
  • Stir-fried veggies
  • Cheese

Directions

In a microwave-safe bowl, spread some red sauce. Next, place a lasagna sheet on top. Spread red sauce pasta with stir-fried vegetables. Spread a layer of white sauce on top, then top with grated cheese and lasagna sheets. Continue layering until you have seven layers. Or until the rim of your baking dish is reached.

Add some mozzarella or processed cheese to the last layer.

Pre-heat the oven. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes in convection + grill mode at 200°F, or until cheese is browned.

Lasagna is ready. Cut it in a square and serve with garlic bread.
